September 14: Sweaters that Fit! with Kim McBrien Evans

September 14, 2021 - 7 p.m. ~ September 14, 2021 - 9 p.m.

Zoom online meeting

Sweaters That Fit!

Are you Sweater Curious? Do you have fears of putting time and effort into sweaters that don’t fit? Let's talk about ways to improve your sweater knitting before you start your pattern. Learn how to create perfect sweater fabric,  how to take the most important measurements for sweater fit, and apply that information to how to choose the best size for you. Learn how to build a “hybrid size” when your measurements span more than one size. Finally, we’ll look at what you need to know about sweater knitting, ease and design details to knit better sweaters for your body and personal style.

**if you wish to take some key measurements during this talk, please wear a light layer such as a t-shirt, and bring a measuring tape that is large enough to measure your full bust.**

Optional lecture knitting

  • a skein of yarn that you hope to make a sweater with, wound and ready to knit.
  • bring 2-3 sets of needles: The first should be a needle in the range recommended on the yarn's label; the second and third should be a couple of sizes larger and smaller than the recommended needle.
  • if you're a keener, go ahead and cast on 40-50 sts with the first set of needles and knit in stockinette stitch for a minimum of 6" and bind off. Bring this swatch to the lecture.

Curiosity and exploration are the name of the game for Canadian knitwear designer and indie hand dyer, Kim McBrien Evans. A lifelong love of colour, texture, and pattern prompted Kim to transition from working artist to textile maven. Her knitwear designs are known for their ability to turn an abstract idea into a textile reality while simultaneously fitting and complementing a wide range of bodies. This design work has led her to explore how home sewers and knitters can create clothing that fits while showing professional designers the beauty of inclusive design.

Her yarn company, indigodragonfly, is renowned for its vibrant colours, offbeat names, and ever-expanding plan for world domination. Her work has appeared in Vogue Knitting, Knitscene, Knit.Wear, Knitting Magazine (UK), A Stash of One’s Own (ed. Clara Parkes), The Sewcialists, Digits & Threads, and Uppercase. She is co-author of Custom Shawls for the Curious and Creative Knitter.
